Overview
Renibacterium salmoninarum is the Gram-positive intracellular bacterium responsible for Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD) in salmonids. The infection is often chronic and insidious, affecting older juveniles and adults, with signs such as white granulomas in the kidney and spleen, anemia, reduced growth and low-level mortalities rather than sudden outbreaks. Because fish may carry the bacterium subclinically, it presents a persistent challenge in broodstock and grow-out operations.
