Overview

Piscirickettsia salmonis is a facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacterium that causes Piscirickettsiosis (also called Salmon Rickettsial Septicaemia, SRS) in farmed salmonids, especially Atlantic and Coho salmon. The disease typically occurs in seawater grow-out and is characterised by lethargy, reduced appetite, skin lesions/ulcers, kidney damage, anemia and high mortality (sometimes up to ~90% in extremes). Management is complicated by the intracellular nature of the pathogen, variable vaccine efficacy and environmental persistence.

The Piscirickettsia salmonis Probe-based qPCR Kit (Lyophilized) is a ready-to-use, freeze-dried reagent system for the rapid and sensitive detection of P. salmonis DNA in biological samples.
This assay utilizes a probe-based real-time qPCR approach to ensure high specificity and accurate quantification of bacterial load, supporting reliable diagnostics and research in fish health and aquaculture disease monitoring.

Each lyophilized reaction bead is pre-formulated with all essential components — DNA polymerase, dNTPs, optimized buffer, and fluorescent probe mix — ensuring consistent performance and eliminating the need for cold-chain logistics.

Key Features

  • Specific and Sensitive: Designed for accurate detection of P. salmonis DNA using TaqMan-style probe chemistry.
  • Lyophilized & Ready-to-Use: Each reaction bead contains all reagents; simply add nuclease-free water and DNA template.
  • Room-Temperature Stable: Maintain stability for up to 12 months without refrigeration.
  • Fast and Reliable: Compatible with standard real-time PCR instruments for efficient workflows.
  • Convenient Format: Ideal for field testing, laboratories with limited cold storage, and routine surveillance programs.

Applications

  • Detection and quantification of P. salmonis in fish tissue, cell culture, or environmental samples
  • Aquaculture health monitoring and outbreak investigation (e.g., Piscirickettsiosis / SRS)
  • Research use in microbiology, epidemiology, and vaccine development
