Overview

Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHNV) is a pathogenic rhabdovirus (Family Rhabdoviridae, genus Novirhabdovirus) affecting salmonid fry and juveniles in freshwater and early marine phases. Infected fish may show darkened colour, exophthalmia (bulging eyes), pale gills (anaemia), hemorrhages on skin and fins, and high mortality, especially under stress or in dense rearing conditions. Because young fish are most susceptible, IHNV remains a key concern in hatcheries and early sea-transfer phases.
